When you notice a frustrated waiter at your local restaurant, what are your first thoughts?
Do you think "What an unprofessional guy! He doesn’t deserve this job. I'm not tipping him."
Or ... do you even for a moment consider that maybe something horrible happened to them earlier that day ... and they're just trying to make it through their shift with what little composure they have left?
You never know what the person next to you is dealing with.
Instead of immediately labeling someone as a bad person, try throwing them a compliment.
Chances are your words will feel like a breeze of fresh air to them
...and they will remember how kind you were.
Then they will do it for other people in similar situations.
And guess what?
That kindness and empathy will find a way to come back to you.
It always does.
