by Vince Lombardi
BADASS PRINCIPLE: “Chase perfection.”
MY TAKE: “If you settle for nothing less than your best, you will be amazed at what you can accomplish in your life.” That’s what Lombardi says. The average person has a “good enough” mentality. That will NOT take you to elite levels of success. You should not strive for good, for quality, or even excellence. You should strive for PERFECTION.
We’ve talked about this before: Average people play to the level of their opponents. When it comes to mindset, people play to the level of their expectations for themselves.
Truly successful people are no different. They play to the level of their expectation of themselves. THE DIFFERENCE is that their expectation is PERFECTION!
Here’s the reality: You won’t always do things perfectly. But that’s not the fucking point. Execution is rarely perfect. But the EXPECTATION has to be perfection. That’s the only way to maintain an elite level of excellence in everything you do.
You’ll find more good thoughts in the Lombardi Rules.

BADASS PRINCIPLE: “Success leaves clues.”
MY TAKE: Tony is a big proponent of modeling strategies that
have proven to work. In other words, find someone who is doing what you want to do and living the life you want to live and FUCKING COPY what they do. It’s not rocket science. That’s exactly what I’ve done.
There are people in this world – authors, leaders, etc – who come up with some pretty original business or marketing ideas. (I think of Seth Godin.)
But here’s the reality: At the core of their life, the principles and actions that made them successful ARE NOT FUCKING ORIGINAL. They might communicate those principles and actions in a way that is new and innovative. But the core ideas and actions are the SAME from person to person to person. Period.
I just can’t fucking say this enough: STOP Looking for some new, original, never-tried-before formula for success. IT DOESN’T FUCKING EXIST.
Look at every truly successful person’s life and you’ll see “clues” (as Tony calls them) of what made them successful.
Then copy them. Do them. Period.
Tony says that in a lot of his books and writings. Check out Awaken the Giant Within and Unlimited Power.
by David Schwartz
BADASS PRINCIPLE: “Action Cures Fear”
MY TAKE: Here’s the reality: EVERYBODY is afraid to step out and attempt something great. EVERYBODY can struggle with self-doubt and self-confidence. Very few people in life just have a natural sense of confidence.
But you need confidence to be successful. You need a little swag. How do you overcome fear and get confidence? ACTION CURES FEAR.
Here’s the thing: When you are indecisive, or procrastinate something, that gives your brain time to think of all the way that things might go wrong. And that’s what feeds fear. The longer you put things off, the bigger the feel will be.
But when you ACT, that movement creates confidence. You move ahead and your brain says, “Well hell yeah, I guess we’re doing this!”
You might be thinking to yourself: “Well what if you act and you fuck things up?
No. It’s hard to explain but the confidence comes from the ACTION not the result. It’s like when you ask that hot girl out. Even if she says no, you think, “I didn’t get her to say yes, but I actually asked. This isn’t so hard!”
The whole “what if I fuck things up” is an excuse. Hardly ever in life will you ACT and do EVERYTHING WRONG. Besides, even if you're wrong, you'll know better next time ... and that contributes to confidence as well.
That’s why I’m all about ACTION. Execution. The more you act, the more confident you’ll become. The more confident you become, the more you start taking control of your life.
by Michael Losier
BADASS PRINCIPLE: “In the moment you think about
a new desire, talk about it, write about it, put it on your cal-
endar, or on a reminder note on your fridge, you have just begun the process because in each of these cases, you are giving your new desire attention, energy and focus.”
MY TAKE: The reason I like this idea – the reason it has been in-
fluential to me – is that it recognizes that our THOUGHTS AND
DESIRES AND WORDS are just like actions.
The way we use them leads to results.
There’s a huge power in our thoughts and desires and words. They are assets that most of us don’t use. We don’t take advantage of them. But we do have to use them. We have to be intentional about using them.
I just can’t emphasize this enough: average people TALK and DON’T ACT. Moderately successful people ACT but maybe don’t talk enough. But the elite people – the people on the highest level of success ACTIVELY THINK AND TALK about their plans and desires AND they ACT. It’s not an either/or. It’s a both/and.
by Tony Hsieh
BADASS PRINCIPLE: “For individuals, character is des-
tiny. For organizations, culture is destiny.”
MY TAKE: For me, the bottom line is that your character and the culture of your business – hell, your whole life – are tied to one another.
Personally, you have to be a good person and do the right fucking thing. All the time. You have to be hard working and loyal, and positive, and all that shit. And the culture of your business will flow out of that. Because let’s be honest: You are the driving force of your business. Everything about the business flows out of who you are.
So before you try to improve the culture of your business, IMPROVE Yourself. Your business culture will follow you.
I got that from Tony’s book Delivering Happiness.
by Gary Vaynerchuk
This is a classic. It's one of the books that - along with Tony Hsieh's Delivering Happiness - helped me become a millionaire. Some of the examples in the original version are now dated, but the principles are proven and timeless. This is a must-read for taking your passion or interests and building an empire.
by Grant Cardone
I love Uncle G! Basic idea of this book: whatever your goals are, you should aim 10 times higher and plan to do 10 times more work than you think. Cardone is a master salesman and entrepreneur and knows what it takes to succeed.
by Tim Ferriss
Ferriss has some interesting ideas and they are not for everyone. But, his basic idea is a killer one: you can design a life and work situation for yourself where you aren't a slave to someone else. You can have the freedom to dictate your focus and work schedule. This book shows you how.
by Tim Grover
Honestly? I have never met anyone as competitive as I am, but Tim Grover, the author, is. And the people he worked with and interviewed are, too. This book is fucking awesome. Read it to develop your competitive mindset.
by Adrian Gostick
The title pretty much explains the contents. Incredible book
by Pejman Ghadimi
My friend PJ is one of the smartest dudes I know. He basically breaks down the thought-processes and practices of the success/wealth mindset and explains it in this book. It's a heavy, deep book, and not what I would call easy reading, but it's worth it.
by Seth Godin
It seems like Godin was talking about promoting your business by telling stories and being authentic before anyone else was. Whether he was or not, this book is a classic. It's essential to shaping your approach to marketing your brand or yourself.
by Dan Fleyshman
The MFCEO Project Podcast episode with Dan about how to start a business is one of our best ever. This is a short and simple, but thorough book that does exactly what the title says. Must-have for anyone starting out in entrepreneurialism.
by Gary Vaynerchuck
Another classic on marketing and messaging. I bought a copy for every single person that works for me in all of my companies. It's that good!
by John Wooden
Don't just read books by great and successful people. Read books about great and successful people. Few coaches have dominated like UCLA's John Wooden. He was a great man on and off the court. This is an incredible book about his life, principles, and practices.
by David Jolliffe
I'm a car guy, so I had to include this one. It's a great story of the development of an incredible company. Many lessons learned that you can apply to your own business.
